药物研发的目的是开发出可选择性靶向特定受体的药物。但这个成果表明许多已知的的药物只能广泛的靶向受体（缺乏特异性），这就将大大偏离预期效果以及研发初衷。

This effort revealed that [many known drugs ] [bind to ] [a larger diversity of receptors] (rather 被省略) than (binding to those receptors that they were designed with 被省略) [previously anticipated and motivated efforts（to develop increasingly selective drugs 修饰efforts)].

其中 【they(这里指 drugs) were designed with the purpose】 to develop increasingly selective drugs，但是由于previously anticipated and motivated efforts 已经含有预期设定的意思，和中文方括号里的 were designed with the purpose 重叠，于是就把这个整体省略了，替换成作者更喜欢的这种说法。

This effort revealed that many known drugs bind to a larger diversity of receptors than previously anticipated and motivated efforts to develop increasingly selective drugs.
所以全文的意思是，实验证明大多数已知的药物其实都是广撒网，而不是和最初想要设计的那样能高选择性靶向受体
