CSC PhD scholarships at University of Manchester – organic synthesis
The University of Manchester, UK, has a formal agreement with the China Scholarship Council to develop research collaborations between UK and Chinese universities/research institutions, and has a number of PhD fee-waiver scholarships available. Interested students who wish to develop an application with Prof Michael Greaney in the area of organic synthesis are invited to contact him (michael.greaney@manchester.ac.uk).
Competitive candidates are expected to be MSc graduates or outstanding BSc degree holders from the best Chinese Universities, having published at least one good journal paper.

The English language requirements are either the IELTS 6.5 overall with no less than 5.5 in each subtest or TOEFL IBT overall 90 with no less than 22 in each component.  A certificate is valid for 2 years from the date the test was taken and must be valid on 17 September 2018.

Deadline for contacting Prof Greaney is Fri 12 Jan 2018

Applicants wanted for Chinese Scholarship Council PhD scholarship at the University of Manchester in the Greaney Laboratory starting Sept 2018.

The Greaney laboratory works in organic synthesis in the areas of C-H activation, photoredox catalysis, and aryne chemistry. The proposed studentship will focus on earth-abundant transition metals, and invent ways of applying them to fundamental bond-forming reactions in chemistry. The Greaney group have developed photoredox C-N and C-S bond forming reactions using visible light and copper and titania catalysts, as a sustainable alternative to established ruthenium-based methods in photochemistry. From this platform of preliminary results, the PhD student will develop new ways of using iron photoredox catalysts that can realise fundamental bond formations such as amide, ester, and biaryl, with applications of sustainable catalysis to drug synthesis and small natural product exemplification.
The Greaney laboratory offers a vibrant training environment with 8 active PhD students and 4 PDRAS, forming a structure of expertise in the form of co-workers, chemicals and equipment, which are expected to create synergies for the rapid application of the novel catalytic methods discovered by the PhD student in the course of their degree.
