Title: Analysis at nanoscale of the Interactions of nanoparticles with concrete

Abstract:
The main purpose of the thesis is the development and improvement of the strength and durability of concrete using nanomaterials for various applications, including those related to the storage of nuclear waste. The new generation of concrete including nano-materials can meet specific environmental concerns.
The handling of the concrete at the nanoscale is severely limited by the lack of accurate knowledge about the nanostructure of calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H), the main binding phase of the cement-based materials. In addition, conventional analytical methods are unable to provide an accurate model of the cement reaction rate with water depending on the temperature, the water / cement ratio and the grain size of the fact that the reactions occur in nanoscale pores. Understanding the structure of concrete at a nano level helps to analyze important processes related to the strength, fracture, corrosion, radiation effects and even adjust the desired properties of concrete.
This thesis mainly aims to explore how certain nanomaterials fill the pores, interact with concrete components, affecting the degree of hydration and may reduce resistance to compression. The diffusion behavior of nanoparticles and their effects on the thermo-mechanical properties of concrete will also be assessed. This new class of cementitious materials will be subjected to several mechanical tests under conditions of storage of nuclear waste. The structural and dynamic stability of structures will be examined under the radiation effect. Finally, will be considered the possibility of providing a more solid and durable concrete with high resistance to radioactive irradiation.

The candidate must have a solid knowledge of mechanical and civil engineering as well as a knowledge of computer language. Previous experience or on ab initio and/or molecular dynamics is desirable but not required.
The candidate will prepare his thesis at the Laboratory of Civil and Geo-Environment (LGCgE) in the geo-materials group led by Professor Zaoui.
