Photocatalytic synthesis group at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, is looking for motivated and productive students who have their own funding to perform PhD research in the Netherlands in sustainable catalysis in the area of natural gas activation using solar light.

Methane is the main constituent of natural gas and the largest projected available hydrocarbon source of the future. Large transportation costs, however, prohibit efficient methane collection and utilization, especially on its remote generation sites, such as shale gas fields or where natural gas is a byproduct of oil extraction, such as deep sea oil platforms. Thus, methane (oxidative) liquefaction into the selected liquid hydrocarbons on the very methane extraction site would reduce the transportation costs while increasing the recovery and availability. Current hydrocarbon liquefaction processes, used for more than a century, are operated at a high temperature and high pressure, and based on syngas as intermediate. These processes are energy, infrastructure, and capital cost intensive. In the proposed research, we will develop a ambient temperature methane activation process based on a conceptual process that utilizes inexpensive electrons from photovoltaics or Solar light and halides ions as photocatalysts. In particular, metal bromide and -chloride materials will be synthesized, and nanostructured to enhance their light absorptive properties. These materials will be used in a photochemical looping photoreactor, which will be used in liquefaction processes.

Objectives of this research:

-perform electrochemical and photochemical activation of CH4 using halides as coupling materials
