The measured distance between the two nearest atom rows is 2.22A ̊, i.e., close to the (111) interplanar distance of Pd (2.25 A ̊ ). Rows of Pd atom can be observed on the surfaces of most Co@Pd particles, denoting the uniformity of the Pd shell. The Co@Pd nanoparticles consist of 34 mol% Pd and 66 mol% Co, determined by ICP-AES measure- ments, that is consistent with the expected Pd/Co molar ratio (33/67). On the basis of the particle¡¯s size, composi- tion, and lattice parameters, and assuming that the parti- cles are spherical, the estimated thickness of the Pd shell was 0.54 nm, i.e., about 2.4 atomic layers.
