A two-year postdoctoral fellowship is available to conduct structural studies of RNA virus replication in the group of Lars-Anders Carlson at Umeå University, Sweden.

Job description

Flaviviruses are a major group of pathogenic positive-sense RNA viruses including e.g. Dengue virus, Zika virus and tick-borne encephalitis virus. To replicate their genomes inside the infected cell, they depend on an elaborate remodelling of host-cell membranes which creates a virus-induced replication organelle on the endoplasmic reticulum membrane.

In this project, the postdoc will use biochemical methods and cryo-EM to study the structure and membrane remodelling properties of the proteins responsible for creating the flaviviral genome replication organelle. We offer a unique setup for this project in terms of a collaborative environment between four labs (three located in Ume&#229 studying tick-borne encephalitis virus from protein to organism level. The core of the project will be biochemistry and cryo-EM of viral replication proteins, and the postdoc will have ample measurement time on the local Titan Krios cryo-EM.  Within the network the postdoc will also be able to draw on expertise from, and expand the project into, e.g. advanced cell biology and fluorescence microscopy, biosafety level 3 virology work, cryo-electron tomography of cells, and membrane reconstitution methods. We offer extensive opportunities for training in e.g. cryo-EM, cell biology and virology.

The fellowship is for two years and is placed at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Umeå University, Sweden.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a doctoral degree at the project start, and should have a solid training in a field such as structural biology, biochemistry or molecular biology. Previous experience in purifying and working with recombinant proteins, in particular membrane proteins, is especially beneficial, as is experience in structural biology methods. However, ambitiousness, creativity and scientific potential as proven by publications is crucial and we thus welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds. Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English, and good interpersonal skills are required due to the collaborative nature of the project.

Application

Your application should contain a cover letter and a CV including publication list and contact information to three referees, one of whom should be your PhD advisor. Submit your application as a PDF marked with the reference number FS 2.1.6-1167-21, both in the file name and in the subject field of the email, to medel@diarie.umu.se and lars-anders.carlson@umu.se. The deadline for the application is 9 July 2021.

In case of any questions, please contact Lars-Anders Carlson, lars-anders.carlson@umu.se.
