in francis scott key fitzgerald's fiction "the great gatsby", there has a sentence in chapter one:
he didn't say any more,but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way,and i understood that he meant a great deal more than that.
i have noticed that there have two distinct translation:
第一种是方振宇的“他没再说什么，我们父子间虽话不多，却心意相通，所以我能明白他的言外之意。”
另一种是：他并没有说很多,但我们在缄默中通常能理解到他想说的,同时我明白他所指的远比我们理解的要多。
我的疑问是：盖茨比到底能明白他的父亲（明白言外之意，第一种翻译），还是他只能明白一部分（父亲的意思远比我理解的要多，而我只能理解一部分，第二种翻译）？

在我看来，这两种翻译的意思相差较大. 焦点我看来主要是对more than that的理解，that到底是指“that i understand”（即我能理解的，针对第二种翻译），还是指his father had say(他父亲说过的)，如果是这个，那么第一种翻译更准确。 返回小木虫查看更多
