The Lab for Infrastructure Sensing and Data Science (https://web.northeastern.edu/isds/) directed by Prof. Hao Sun, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University, Boston, MA (ranked 40th in the US News 2018 edition), currently has two openings for Ph.D. students with full financial support in Fall 2019 to work on the following projects/topics: (1) combined spatiotemporal deep learning and model-based simulation approaches for multiscale structural modeling, fragility analysis and resilience assessment; (2) big data analytics for continuous health monitoring of structural systems; (3) physics informed AI and machine learning approaches for data-driven structural system modeling and identification; (4) data-driven uncertainty quantification and computational mechanics.

Ideally, the successful candidates should (1) have a BS/MS degree in civil engineering, engineering mechanics, computer science, electrical engineering, or other related disciplines, (2) have some background on signal processing, data analytics and/or uncertainty quantification, (3) be proficient in python and MATLAB code developments, and (4) possess excellent communication skills. Knowledge in machine/deep learning is a plus, but not required. Students with a background outside civil engineering and engineering mechanics will be admitted to the Interdisciplinary PhD Program and will be co-advised or work closely with faculties from other departments such as Electrical and Computer Engineering. About the PI: Dr. Hao Sun is an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University and a Research Affiliate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He obtained his Ph.D., M.Phil. and M.S. degrees from Columbia University. Prior to joining Northeastern, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a Postdoc Associate at MIT. His research focuses on the advancement of scientific knowledge and the development of innovative sensing, modeling, AI and data analytics technologies to tackle built environment issues, specifically to address resilience, sustainability, and safety issues of civil infrastructure systems. Dr. Sun has co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed journal publications, and his work has been featured in various media coverages (e.g., MIT News, Fox News, Forbes Magazine, ASCE Civil Engineering Magazine, etc.). Dr. Sun is the receipt of multiple awards including the 2018 Forbes "30 Under 30": Science , two poster competition awards from EMI 2014, Boeing Fellowship, China National Scholarship, China Civil Engineering Society Citation for Outstanding College Graduate, and many others.
