A Full PhD studentship -Experimental Aerodynamics

Applications are sought from outstanding individuals for a full PhD studentship at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE), The University of Manchester, UK, with a start date between January and October 2018.
This PhD research project aims to achieve a significant reduction of aerodynamic losses in compressors using micro/macro surface structures. At the beginning of the project, the surface features will be designed with the aid of numerical simulations and be manufactured using advanced manufacturing techniques. A series of carefully designed experiments will then be carried out in a linear cascade to investigate the effect of changing pattern geometry on aerodynamic losses, to identify the optimal geometry for given incoming flow conditions and to establish the physical flow mechanisms at play. Based on the experimental results, design guidelines for selection of surface structures for practical settings will be also developed.
The successful candidate will work under the direction of an academic supervisory team with a combined research expertise in aerodynamics and manufacturing. This project will be undertaken in close collaboration with a leading industrial company in the UK, offering a unique opportunity of transferring research findings into innovative engineering designs.
Preference will be given to candidates who have already completed or will obtain a Master degree by July 2018. The candidates are expected to be top performing students in their classes. Research experience in experimental fluid dynamics is considered essential. To meet the university entrance requirement, the candidates must achieve a TOEFL score of 88 or above (with no subtest score lower than 20) or a minimum IELST test score of 6.5 (with no subtest score lower than 5.5). The successful candidate will receive a full studentship which covers both the tuition fees and an annual stipend of ￡14,000 for 3.5 years, and join a research team which has an excellent track record in experimental fluid dynamics and flow control at Manchester.
