    Abstract
    ZSM-5 zeolite, when doped with fluorine species in relatively low concentration using ammonium fluoride as precursor,
    and subsequently activated stepwise at high temperature, shows an enhanced surface acidity because of: (i) the formation of
    new Bronsted acid sites; and (ii) the strengthening of some acid sites of the parent zeolite. This is ascribed to the proton attack
    of the zeolite surface by the chemisorbed HCF− ion pair. Under these preparation conditions, the zeolite structure is fully
    preserved. Such enhanced acid properties are traduced by a significant increase in the yield of methyl tert-butyl ether (gas

    2.1. Catalyst preparation
    (i) The acid form of the H-ZSM5 was prepared by
    repeated ion exchange of the commercially available
    Na-ZSM5 zeolite (Zeocat PZ 2/30, Na form, powder,
    Chemie Uetikon, Switzerland) with a 10 wt.% solution
    of ammonium chloride at 80C with stirring. Each
    treatment lasted for 1 h, after which the used solution
    was decanted and fresh solution added (1 g of zeolite
    in 10 ml solution). The procedure was repeated 4–5
    times, after which the solid was washed on the filter
    several times with water and dried at 120C. The
    acid form was generated by activation at 450C in air
    overnight. The final catalyst (extrudates), hereafter referred
    to as H-ZSM5, was obtained,
