| Li Dongyuan put forward the idea that one’s vital Qi is stored in the spleen and stomach. Once the spleen and stomach is injured, the vital Qi will weaken and decline, thus shorten one’s normal life span. He proposed that “Illnesses arise from internal injuries of the spleen and stomach”. This indicates that a deteriorating spleen or stomach is the main factor causing various illnesses. Hence, recuperating the spleen and stomach is an important preventive measure in maintaining good health. Spleen and stomach transform Qi from food essence and then transport it to other viscus. Health will be compromised if spleen and stomach deteriorate as food intake can’t be properly digested and absorbed by the body. 'Nei jing' stated that normal Yangming meridians should be sufficiency of both Qi and blood. Therefore, the weakening and declination of the Yangming meridians may be manifested as dry facial skin and hair loss, which is the initial sign of ageing. |
