Ph.D Project : Artificial molecular machines in membranes
This PhD project will focus on the design and synthesis of light-driven molecular machines able to operate within lipid bilayer membranes. These molecular machines will find application in controlling transmembrane transport as well as the cellular processes associated with this transport. Furthermore, they may provide new tools for (solar) energy conversion and storage across bilayer membranes.
Description of the position: We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic chemist with an M.Sc. degree in organic synthesis, supramolecular chemistry, photochemistry, or a related topic. We seek candidates with a good team spirit, who like to work in an internationally-oriented environment.
The organization: Our group is based at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science of Leiden University in the new Gorlaeus Building. The Leiden Institute of Chemistry is one of the most prominent research institutes in the Netherlands and retains an excellent international reputation and top position in Europe. Core activities are in Chemical Biology and Energy & Sustainability. Leiden University is former home to Huygens, Descartes, Lorentz, Van der Waals, Einstein, and others.
