Brain machine interfaces – cochlear implants.

The project is a collaboration between the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the University of Copenhagen (KU). We invite 2 CSC applications for 3-year Ph.D. positions. Start date is Sept 1. 2021.

DTU is a technical university providing internationally leading research, education, innovation and scientific advice. Our staff of 6,000 advance science and technology create innovative solutions that meet society's demands, and our 11,200 students are being educated to address the technological challenges of the future. DTU is among the top 10 engineering universities in Europe.
The Section for Manufacturing Engineering at DTU MEK performs experimental, theoretical, and numerical research in manufacturing engineering. It covers a wide range of manufacturing processes and modelling approaches, metrology at all scales, micro/nano manufacturing, and additive manufacturing.

The University of Copenhagen (KU) is a comprehensive university. Driven by intellectual creativity and critical thinking since 1479, researchers and students at the KU have expanded horizons and contributed to moving the world forward. With its 5,000 researchers and 39,000 students, the University boasts an international research and study environment and is highly ranked on the world's best universities' leading ranking lists.
The department of Neuroscience’s mission is to perform top-class basic and translational research to advance our understanding of brain functions as well as brain diseases and develop treatment. We expect our bench-to-bedside strategy to reinforce collaborative efforts with clinicians and other scientific disciplines both nationally and internationally. We also take responsibility for educating the next generation of researchers and physicians within neuroscience to develop understanding and treatment of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases.

DTU and KU will provide tuition fee, and additional stipends such that the CSC student’s total monthly compensation will be 12000 dkk (law requirement), which is equivalent to 12860 RMB.
Research field

The project aims to research and develop advanced cochlear implants (CI) to treat hearing-impaired patients. DTU’s role is to develop advanced CI using MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems) technology. Research activities will take place in the largest university cleanroom in Europe (DTU Nanolab). KU’s role is to design and conduct scientific experiments with advanced CI on an animal model. Research at KU Medical School takes place at the advanced Mærsk tower laboratories. The candidate is expected to perform surgeries and work with animal models. We work in close collaboration with Oticon, the worlds largest company in the area of hearing treatment. Its headquarter is located in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Responsibilities and tasks for DTU PhD student
To take project ownership. To design CI in collaboration with KU, Oticon and National Hospital, fabricate CI in the cleanroom. This includes the below activities.
1.        CAD design (Ledit, Clewin).
2.        Mechanical modelling.
3.        MEMS fabrication in cleanroom using advanced nanofabrication technologies such as photolithography, thin-film deposition, plasma etching. Independently with guiding assistance from engineers.
4.        Characterization with SEM, AFM and optical microscopy. Independently.
5.        3 months academic exchange at e.g. Oticon R&D site in Nice, France.
6.        Publish in high impact journals and co-author patent applications. In collaboration.

Qualifications
Candidates must obtain a master's degree before Sept 1 2021.

We are looking for a bright and empathic person with a master's degree in MEMS, biomedical engineer, mechanical/process/mechatronics engineering with strong interest in medical devices or similar.

Because of the project and project teams' ambitious nature, we are looking for a top students with great ambitions to make a difference by cutting-edge engineering, strong experimental skills, open-mindedness, “I can do”, and never-give-up mentality.

Responsibilities and tasks for KU PhD student
In collaboration with the engineers at DTU the student should test the CI in rodents. This involves
1.        Contributing with the CI design based on the rat inner ear anatomy.
2.        Surgical implantation of prototypes of CI under supervision of and training by the PI
3.        Testing the CI in rodents under different conditions.
4.        3 months academic exchange at a lab involved in auditory sensation, likely in Switzerland.
5.        Publish in high impact journals and co-author patent applications.

Qualifications
Candidates must obtain a master's degree before Sept 1 2021.
We are looking for a student with a background in neuroscience and an interest in performing animal experiments. Critical thinking, ambitions and independence. Experience with programming in Matlab or Python.

Application
For the DTU position please submit your application to Dr. Bingdong Chang, Dr. Jeremy Marozeau, and Dr. Anpan Han, 韩安磐.
For the KU position, please submit your application to Dr. Rune Berg, and Dr. Jeremy Marozeau.

The following must be attached in English:
•        A letter motivating the application (cover letter)
•        CV
