Prof. Jianyu Li is seeking two postdoctoral associates to work on research projects at the intersection of biomaterials, mechanics and biomedical engineering. The research will center on developing novel biomaterials with unprecedented mechanical properties, biological functions and translational capacity for tissue repair and regeneration. The candidates will join the Laboratory of Biomaterials Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University. One postdoc will focus on the development and assessment of surgical glues for intervertebral disc repair. Another postdoc will develop hemostatic biomaterials and technologies to control hemorrhage. The positions are available for a maximum of two years.

Job Requirements: Ph.D. in biological sciences and bioengineering, or related engineering fields; experience in cell culture, animal surgery, flow cytometry and other biological analysis; self-motivation and creativity; ability to prioritize and multitask in a multidisciplinary and team-oriented setting; strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Expertise and skills in animal experiments related to intervertebral discs or hemostasis would be preferred.

The candidates should be able to work independently, and collaborate with researchers and surgeons who collaborate with Prof. Jianyu Li. The candidates must be within 5 years of obtaining their Ph.D. to be able to receive Canadian funds. Responsibilities include in vivo study and animal surgery; polymer modification and purification, hydrogel synthesis, mechanical characterization, flow cytometry, live imaging, antibody staining, qRT-PCR, cell culture, in vitro differentiation assays; cooperating with and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students; and presenting to the scientific community through talks and publications.

Application: Please email the following to Prof. Jianyu Li (via jianyu.li@mcgill.ca) as a single pdf document: 1) a cover letter specifying relevant qualifications and training, 2) curriculum vitae with publications, 3) statement of current research interests and expertise (one page maximum), 4) two letters of reference or the contact information for two references, and 5) one peer-reviewed publication. Please include “Application for Postdoc [Your Name]” in the email subject line. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Background: McGill University is one of the top universities in Canada and ranked 31st in the world (2020 QS World). Montreal where McGill is located is among the most livable cities in the world.
