Ph.D. Research Assistantship in Soil Biogeochemistry
Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at the University of Wyoming (UWYO) in the United States is recruiting a Ph.D. graduate
student in Soil Science to work on phosphorus biogeochemistry in dryland ecosystems, who will start in fall 2020 or spring 2021. Various
techniques, including synchrotron X ray techniques, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and stable isotopes, will be used to study
phosphorus biogeochemical behavior not only in soils but also related to aeolian dust, vegetation, and biological soil crusts.
This project is part of a recently funded National Science Foundation 'Critical Zone Thematic Cluster' project centered at the University of Texas – El Paso (UTEP). The critical zone is the surface layer of the Earth from the top of the canopy to the groundwater that supports human life. Critical zone science is an interdisciplinary approach that combines geology, ecology, soil science, hydrology, microbiology, etc. More than 10 graduate
students and post-doc scholars from diverse disciplines will work on this critical zone project. Thus, the project provides a fantastic opportunity
to work as part of an integrated scientific team of faculty and students at UTEP, UWYO, and other partner universities and fosters connections
within the scientific community centered around critical zone science.
Funding will cover a four-year Research Assistantship, project supplies, and travel costs. Ideal candidates would have substantial research
experience, a published paper from work, such as in Soil Science, Geoscience, or Environmental Science, as an undergraduate or M.S. student,
strong performance in science courses (GPA > 3), and a desire to do field and laboratory work. The Ph.D. student on this project will initially work on grant objectives and then springboard into projects of student’s own independent design. Contact Dr. Mengqiang “Mike” Zhu at
mzhu6@uwyo.edu if you are interested or have questions. Applications can be accepted at any time, but desired starting time is September 2020 or January 2021. The webpage of the research group can be found here. https://www.uwyo.edu/zhuensochem/
