The biomanufacturing lab in the Department of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University seeks 3 Ph.D. students to implement research in microalgae, smart polymers, biomass feedstock bioleaching, and fermentation.
•        Degree-required course work
•        Work on NSF, DOE and USDA funded Projects:
o        Project 1: Smart polymer
        Thermo-responsive polymer (TRP) synthesis and characterization
        Chemistry of TRP phase change
        Understanding and visualization of interactions between TRP and microalgal cells  
        CO2 fixation to enhance microalgae cultivation
        Microalgal blooming control
o        Project 2: Biomass feedstock bioleaching
        Biomass characterization
        Fungi and bacterial cultivation
        Bioleaching kinetics and modeling
        Bioleaching mechanisms
        Bioreactor design
o        Project 3: Starch biomodification for anticancer drugs
        Starch chemistry and characterization
        Starch hydrolysis and fermentation
        Membrane separation
        Anticancer analysis
o        Project 4: Fermentation
        Biomass fermentation for nutraceuticals
        Wastewater treatment
        Reactor design
•        Must have a master or bachelor’s degree in Material Science and Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, Biosystems Engineering, Biological &Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Microbiology, Fermentation or closely related fields
•        Demonstrated research experience and written and oral communication skills
•        GRE>294 with writing >3.5, TOFEL>90 or IELTS>=7.0, and GPA>=3.0
$27,000/year including stipend, tuition and benefits
