Apologies for the time taken to get back to you.  I have looked again at
your manuscript and the response to the first reviewers comments.  While I
agree that you have addressed the majority of the comments raised by that
referee, as the Editor I made a judgement that your manuscript in its
present form was not specifically focussed enough on the surface science
(e.g. only 1 of your 11 figures was from a surface sensitive technique -
XPS) even after your revision of the manuscript.
For publication in Applied Surface Science the editorial board would
expect to see much more emphasis on the application and discussion of
information derived from surface sensitive techniques e.g. Your XPS data.
Please remember that Applied Surface Science is first and foremost, a
journal that publishes high quality Surface Science.
While I am sure this is not what you were hoping to hear, I hope if does
at least offer some explanation.
