the synthesis and solid state pharmaceutical centre (sspc) is a research centre hosted at the university of limerick and funded by science foundation ireland (total budget of over €60 million). sspc carries out research to better understand mechanisms, control processes and predict outcomes for the efficient and environmentally sustainable production of medicines.

applications are invited for a phd studentship, funded by sspc, based in the bioelectrochemistry and biocatalysis group in the bernal institute at the university of limerick. the project, under the supervision of prof. e. magner, will develop flow biocatalytic reactors that can be utilised singly or in sequence to perform biochemical transformations of substrates of interest in the preparation of pharmaceutical materials. the project will entail preparing and characterising a range of materials, such as mesoporous silicates (1, 2), metal organic framework materials (3) and nanoporous gold (4-8)) for the directed immobilisation (9) of enzymes in flow systems that will be utilised as reactors in sample reactions such as those listed below:



the successful candidate will join a well-equipped research laboratory in the bernal institute. the institute houses a multidisciplinary team of over 350 scientists (chemistry, materials science, physics and biochemistry) and engineers (mechanical, aeronautical, biomedical, manufacturing and electronic) who undertake research in the design, synthesis, processing, characterization, modification, modeling and application of materials. the institute is comprised of 20,000 m2 of contiguous, modern purpose-built offices and laboratories, representing an investment of >€100 m.

applicants should have, or expect to have, a first class or upper second class honours degree (b.sc.) or a masters degree in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering (or a related field). the successful candidate will have good laboratory skills, the ability to work independently and to work collaboratively as part of a research group.

the laboratory has all of the equipment necessary for the preparation, characterisation and utilisation of a wide range of support materials for the immobilisation of enzymes. in addition to the collaborative network in sspc, the group has extensive international collaborative linkages and typically host an average of 2-3 international researchers each year. research secondments to other laboratories (in sspc academic and industry partners) are planned, while secondments to current collaborators (tu delft, u. cagliari) are also possible the  successful candiate will enrol in the structured phd programme at the university and, as appropriate, take advanced technical modules together with a series of modules on transferable skills.
