Funded PhD position available to start immediately at The University of Western Australia (one of group 8 universities in Australia) Dr. Yit-Heng Chooi (ARC Future Fellow)'s research group on Genome Mining of Actinomycetes.
The Chooi research group in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Piggott at Macquarie University and Industry partners (MST and AVT) have recently won $3m from the Australian Commonwealth Government£¨under the CRC-P scheme£© for research on discovery of new antibiotics from Australian microbes.

The project will involve the use of state-of-art genome mining tools to discover new antibiotics and biosynthetic pathways. The project will have access to microbial culture collection of nearly 500,000 strains, where hundreds of them will be sequenced under this project.
The Chooi group is seeking to recruit a PhD student of high calibre to embark on this project as soon as possible (recent Master graduates are encourage to apply). The PhD stipend will be directly funded under this grant (not a separate scholarship application) along with a tuition fees waiver from UWA.
Students from Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Pharmacy/Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical/Biomolecular Engineering background are encouraged to apply. Candidate will be selected based on the suitability for this project by Dr. Chooi, Dr. Piggott (Macquarie) and Dr Lacey (MST).
English language requirement:
IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (no band lower than 6.0)
TOFEL (Internet-based Test (iBT)): An overall score of 82 with a minimum score of: 22 in the Writing section; 18 in the Reading section; 20 in the Speaking section; and 20 in the Listening section
