1) Error Analysis: The manuscript should include a detailed explanation of the error analysis used to evaluate and characterize the experimental data which should encompass both inherent error and statistical/random error. Inherent error and uncertainties in every variable should be listed. Many uncertainties change with the value of variable itself, e.g. a thermocouple usually has different uncertainty at 20C than 500C. For these cases, either the maximum uncertainty should be reported or at each individual datum. Some reported data are calculated from the main measured experimental variables: the propagation of errors from the individual uncertainties to the calculated value should be described and listed. The most reliable experimental data most often comes from multiple experimental runs (trials). From multiple measurements (triplicate or more preferred), the averages and standard deviations can be computed to understand the random error. Measurements that represent single measurements (no replication) without a very detailed inherent error analysis and justification for lacking multiple measurements, will not be accepted for publication. The error reported in manuscripts should include both the inherent and random error (standard deviation), although often random errors are much greater than the inherent error and may be used by themselves. The number of significant figures listed should be determined by the ultimate errors.
