CSC Student Positions in Energy Materials available at UBC Canada (2017-2018)
Prof. Jian Liu's group in the School of Engineering at University of British Columbia (Okanagan campus) is currently accepting CSC students (Master's and visiting students) in 2017-2018. Potential candidates should send an email with detailed CV, language certificate, publications, and statement of research interests to Jian.liu@ubc.ca.
Positions available:
(1) CSC Master's student positions (1-2 positions);
(2) CSC visiting student positions (2-3 positions).
Requirements:
(1) Strong background and experience in nanomaterials synthesis, characterizations, and applications in electrochemical energy storage systems (preferred areas: batteries and supercapacitors).
(2) Strong skill-set in English technical writing, communication, and teamwork;
(3) Self-motivated and hard working;
(4) Language requirements for the Master's students: TOEFL: a minimum overall score of 92, with minimum scores of 22 in Reading & Listening and 21 in Writing & Speaking (Internet version); minimum score of 550 (paper version); IELTS: a minimum overall band score of 6.5, with no individual component score less than 6.0.
About Prof. Jian Liu: Jian Liu completed a B. Eng. degree in Metallic Materials Engineering at Sichuan University in 2006, an M. Eng. in Materials Science and Engineering at University of Science and Technology Beijing in 2009, and a Ph. D. in Materials Science at the University of Western Ontario in 2013 with Prof. Xueliang (Andy) Sun. Prior to joining UBC as an assistant professor, Dr. Liu was a postdoctoral fellow in Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL, 2015-2016), and Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2014-2015). Dr. Liu is the recipient of the prestigious NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (2014-2016), a PNNL Alternated-Sponsored Fellowship (2015-2016), the Mitacs Elevate Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (2013-2014), and the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad (2013). Please refer to google scholar (https://scholar.google.ca/citati ... AAAJ&hl=en) or personal website (https://engineering.ok.ubc.ca/faculty/jianliu.html) for research samples.
The strategic focuses of Dr. Liu's group at UBC Okanagan are to identify and develop key electrode and electrolyte materials to enable high-performance lithium-ion batteries and new-generation battery technologies for transportation and stationary applications, and to develop fundamental understandings on the synthesis-structure-performance relationship in these energy materials and their underlying mechanisms. Dr. Liu's research group has close collaborations with industrial partners, universities, national labs (PNNL, LBNL), and synchrotron radiation centers (CLS, ALS).
About UBC Okanagan campus: As one of the world's leading universities, UBC creates an exceptional learning environment that fosters global citizenship, advances a civil and sustainable society, and supports outstanding research to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada and the world. The School of Engineering invites you to join us in achieving UBC's vision. The Faculty of Applied Science's School of Engineering at UBC's Okanagan campus has assembled world-class faculty and developed an innovative engineering curriculum to offer undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees in Electrical, Civil and Mechanical specializations. The campus is situated in one of the most scenic and appealing regions in Canada and offers faculty and students an intimate learning environment and exciting opportunities for interdisciplinary and region-centered research. The School of Engineering is located in a state-of-the-art building completed in July 2011.
Update: add one position in the direction of electrochemical energy conversion (ORR, microbial fuel cells).
Requirements:
(1) Strong background and experience in nanomaterials synthesis, characterizations, and applications in electrochemical energy conversion systems (such as PEMFCs, microbial fuel cells).
(2) Publications on energy conversion topics in peer-reviewed journals
(3) Be able to independently perform electrochemical testings;
(4) Expect to start in Sep. 2018, or afterward as soon as possible;
(5) Language: 1 or 2 year CSC visiting students (no requirement);
4 year CSC student: OEFL: a minimum overall score of 92, with minimum scores of 22 in Reading & Listening and 21 in Writing & Speaking (Internet version); minimum score of 550 (paper version); IELTS: a minimum overall band score of 6.5, with no individual component score less than 6.0.
