Abstract: In the view of modeling difficulty of analytic model-based fault detection and diagnosis approach, this paper proposes a modular approach based on dynamic simulation. In this approach, according to the mechanism of the system and the principle of detection and diagnosis, the model of the system and the model of fault detection and diagnosis are established, respectively. The system model can be built using a general dynamic simulation software. The fault detection and diagnosis model is completed by MATLAB/SIMULINK. To verify the feasibility of this method, a case of methanol-water thermally coupled distillation is studied. The results show that this approach can serve to detect faults of system whether the operating conditions are changed or not. Fault diagnosis can be completed by analyzing the residuals of the monitoring variables and their physical meanings.
