PhD POSITION WITHIN SOLIDIFICATION METALLURGY AND MELT TREATMENT OF ALUMINIUM ALLOYS
A PhD position is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. (To undertake the teaching duties it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language)

With its nature of recyclability, light weight and climate friendliness, more and more aluminium contents are used in consumer electronics and residential products. Usually, these products are made of extrusion products, and have demanding surface quality requirements, for example high gloss appearance. The Norwegian aluminium industry has the ambition to develop a new generation of aluminium alloys tailored for extrusion profiles with superior surface qualities, in particular high gloss appearance. Supported by the Research Council of Norway, and in collaboration with SINTEF and NTNU and other industrial partners, Hydro Aluminium has started with a large scale innovation project, SmartAl.

The PhD project is a part of the project, relating to the efficient grain refinement and melt treatment of DC-cast extrusion aluminium alloys, which is critical to the solidification behavior, the extrusion properties of the ingot and the surface appearance of final products. A special focus will be put on a deeper understanding on the clustering of the grain refiner particles and how to remove them by melt treatment. Different innovative experimental approaches and advanced microstructure characterization instruments are going to be applied.

The PhD student is going to work in a multidisciplinary research environment from solidification, heat treatment, extrusion to surface treatment. The PhD student has also the opportunity to collaborate closely with the experienced research scientists and engineers from Hydro Aluminium and SINTEF.

The university has well equipped laboratories related to melt treatment, solidification and microstructure characterization, and software for thermodynamic calculation and microstructure simulation.  Information about the department can be found online at: https://www.ntnu.edu/mse

The successful applicant should hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree or similar in materials science, chemistry, physics, or other relevant areas. Experience with microstructure characterization/ melt treatment or practical laboratory work relevant to the given project will be preferred.

The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that the applicant must have a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) and C or better on the BSc. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: https://ec.europa.eu/education/p ... ion/diploma_en.html

Terms of employment
The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in a structured doctoral study program within the period of the appointment. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work related duties.

NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.

The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.

The application should contain:
• CV including certificates from Bachelor and Master as well as Reference letters.
• List of publications with bibliographical references.
• Documentation of English language proficiency (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, etc.) if English or a Scandinavian language is not the applicant's mother tongue.
• A statement on when the applicant can start in the position if selected.
