Characterising Circulating Tumour Cells Using Ultrasound

A cancer becomes life-threatening when the primary tumour spreads from the place where it first started to another place in the body. The spreading process is called metastasis, which is the principal cause of death in patients diagnosed with invasive cancer. It has been reported that tumour cells shed by the primary tumour into the blood stream, namely circulating tumour cells (CTCs), are the seeds for cancer metastasis.

Ultrasound is a promising candidate technique in separating and characterising CTCs from blood samples taken from cancer patients. This project will develop an ultrasonic sensor, and potentially integrate with microfluidic chips, for detecting CTCs to assist understanding the biology of metastasis. The programme of work will include development of the ultrasonic sensor; testing the sensor on phantoms; and characterisation of live CTCs.

We expect applicants to have:

●A First Class or very good 2.1 honours degree in Physics, Engineering or a relevant field from a UK institution or the equivalent from a non-UK university.
●Good numerical modelling and experimental skills, experience in sensor fabrication and laboratory research are desirable.
●Strong engineering / physical problem solving skills, good communicative and teamwork skills.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
Funding Notes

The full award will cover fees at the Home/EU rate and will provide an annual stipend (￡14,296 in 2016/17) for three and a half years.

This studentship is open to Home, EU (Full award covering fees and stipend) or Overseas Candidates (fees only award)
