History is a vital part of a people’s identity. Though most
Americans are not professional historians, they inevitably
refer to the past as a way of determining who they are
in the present. How people talk about history also influences
their notion of “us” and “them.” Americans may disagree
over the meaning of their history, but even then, in the act of
talking about the same events, they create a shared world of
significance.
