NTNU
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim represents academic eminence in technology and the natural sciences as well as in other academic disciplines ranging from the social sciences, the arts, medicine, teacher education, architecture to fine art. Cross-disciplinary cooperation results in innovative breakthroughs and creative solutions with far-reaching social and economic impact

Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology
Department of Material Science

PhD position in Atomistic and Multiscale modelling

A PhD position is available at the Department of Physics. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. (To undertake the teaching duties it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language)
The position is financed by the research project INSIDES (IN-SItu characterisation and SImulation of Defect Evolution in Silicon). The aim of this project is to solve fundamental questions about generation and evolution of efficiency limiting crystal defects in multicrystalline silicon for solar cells. The project is based on an experimental as well as modelling approach, and the candidate will work in close collaboration with experimental scientists.

Information about the department
The position is organized in the Department of Material Science.

Job description
The candidate’s project will be devoted to atomistic and multiscale modelling of silicon solar cells. The main focus will be on employing atomistic methods (Molecular dynamics, Kinetic Monte Carlo and if needed Density Functional Theory) to study dislocation emission from grain boundaries in silicon during solidification. The results from these simulations will be coupled to simulations at higher scales, such as Dislocation Dynamics and will closely relate to experimental work by another PhD in the project. The goal is to understand the mechanisms causing certain grain boundaries to emit dislocations during solidification. We are seeking a person with a good understanding of material science and numerical modelling. The person need to have the ability to connect simulations performed on different length and time scales with the goal to create new understanding of mechanisms of defect generation during solidification and also be able to work closely with experimentalists on the same topic. The PhD work will be in close collaboration with SINTEF Materials and Chemistry. In addition, it will be desirable with a longer stay abroad for the candidate to work with foreign collaborators at the University of Montreal in Canada.

Detailed information on our PhD programs is found at: http://www.ntnu.edu/nt/research/phd

Qualifications
The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in physics, computational material science or chemistry or a closely related field. A documented background in modeling is required, with a focus on atomistic modelling (molecular dynamics, kinetic monte carlo and/or density functional theory). Experience from modelling of microstructures will be considered an advantage.
The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams. Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates with a PhD degree will not be considered for the position.

The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required and C or higher of the BSc. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test.  Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Terms of employment
The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.

The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.

Further information can be obtained from Professor Yanjun Li (yanjun.li@ntnu.no), Department of Physics, NTNU, Researcher Inga Ringdalen (inga.ringdalen@sintef.no), SINTEF Materials and Chemistry or Senior Researcher Jesper Friis (jesper.friis@sintef.no), SINTEF Materials and Chemistry.
.

The application
Applications with CV, certificates from both Bachelor and Master, possible publications and other scientific works, copies of transcripts, (copies of documentation on English language proficiency test) and reference letters should be submitted.

Applications must be submitted electronically through www.jobbnorge.no.

Applications submitted elsewhere will not be considered.

The reference number of the position is: NT- xx/15

Application deadline:  20. April 2016. 返回小木虫查看更多
