After Table 2, the authors claim they have established the scope of the reaction. It seems to me that they have merely made some progress toward establishing the scope of the reaction. The aryl groups bear only halogens or methoxy groups. The cyclic ketones are all unsubstituted and only one example beyond an acetophenone is reported. Indeed, not much has been learned about functional group tolerance. Clearly there is plenty of room for the further investigation of the scope of the reaction. It would certainly strengthen the paper to have a few examples with functional groups (on the aromatic aldehyde at least) such as CN, OH, SMe, NR2, NHAc.
