another一般指不定事物中的另一个 ；指特定两件东西中的另一个用 the other.  例如 ： If you don't like this one , try another.如果你不喜欢这个，试试另一个。  I have two brothers ; one is twenty , and the other is fifteen. 我有两个兄弟， 一个20岁，另一个15岁 。

不矛盾啊。加定冠词the的含义已经很明显了；不加定冠词时表达“其他的”的概念，而another指“又一个、另一个、再一个”

another  =  an other
  an = 不定冠词 = 任何一个
    If you don't like this one , try another
    如果你不喜欢这个,  试 另外 (任何) 一个

the other
  the = 定冠词 = 非任选
    两件东西中的另一个 = 非任选

each other = one another = 彼此 (不一定两个)
  All of you must learn to treat each other with respect

$2/each = "two dollars each" = "two dollars apiece"
  each = 不定
  apiece = a piece (理由同上)  -> "a ..." / "an.." 是一有用字首
