    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The project focuses on the development of a new nanomaterial for extraction of precious rare earth elements (REEs) from solutions with low metal concentration. The nanomaterial is to render the extraction of REEs feasible from sources where it is currently not profitable. The research involves the production of nanoporous silicon, its surface functionalization, characterization and metal extraction experiments. The position also includes teaching duties approximately 5 % of the working time.

    The position will first be filled for a fixed term from 15.02.2016-31.12.2016. The project continues until end of 2018, and the continuation of the position will be agreed separately.

    The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on levels 2-4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€1,985.85 - 2,475.31/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3% of the job requirement component.

    A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

    DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    We are looking for a motivated and research oriented individual willing to commit to the goals of the project. The applicant should hold a Master¡¯s degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or a comparable field. Good command of the English language is necessary. Knowledge in the areas of inorganic/organic chemistry, solid state physics and porous materials are of advantage. Experience in laboratory work as well as knowledge of the Finnish language are appreciated.

    A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree. Positions of early stage researchers shall always be filled for a fixed term (UEF Administrative Regulations, Section 30).

    The language requirements associated with the position are defined in the Government Decree 770/2009. Members of the university¡¯s teaching and research staff are required to have command of the language they give teaching in (Finnish or Swedish). The Dean of the faculty may grant an exemption from the language proficiency requirements laid down in the Government Decree.
