China's Chen Lijun wins men's 62kg gold
To weightlifting and the world championships in Houston, where China's Chen Lijun would be able to break two world records in the 62-kilo category, but would that be enough to unseat defending champion Kim Un-Guk of the DPRK.
Kim a gold medallist at both the London Olympics and Incheon Asian Games, beat China's Chen by 11 kilograms in South Korea. He showed his power, beating Chen by one kilogram in the snatch.
Chen went ahead in the clean and jerk when he successfully lifted 175kg in his first attempt, with Kim failing to power up 179kg in his third attempt.
The 22-year-old Chen, who also beat Kim in the 2013 world championships, went for a final attempt at 183. He was succesful to set a new world record in the clean. That new standard beat the old mark set by China's Le Mao'sheng 13 years ago. The Chinese would combine to lift 333kg in the two disciplines beating Kim's previous record by one kilogram.
In the women's 53kg, China's Chen Xiao'ting led by 5kg after the snatch but failed in her first two attempts at 120kg in the clean and jerk. She was eventually beaten by world record holder Hsu Shu-ching of Chinese Taipei. Hsu, getting the win by virtue of being lighter, despite both lifting 221kg in total.
