China’s rising wealth has produced a modern horror—a 50-lane traffic jam stretching for miles. Thousands of cars were stuck for hours last week on the Beijing–Hong Kong–Macau Expressway, as vacationers returning from National Day celebrations got stuck in a bottleneck where 50 lanes merged into 20 at a newly installed checkpoint. Some 750 million people—more than half China’s population—hit the road this year for the annual holiday. The chaos renewed calls for mandatory paid leave. Most Chinese travel to parks or visit family all at the same time, on national holidays, because they have no other time off from work.
