Dear 。。。。:

I am writing to follow up on our e-mail correspondence about the possibility of you joining my research group as a visiting doctoral student.  I am quite interested in working with you and Professor 。。。to develop a jointly supervised research program related to our mutual interests in 。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。.  I believe that this would provide a good opportunity to build collaborations between our research groups and will provide you with international experience.

As a visiting scholar you would be a member of my research group and would not have to pay tuition to the university.  My expectation would be that you would conduct research under joint supervision of Professor 。。。。and me.  As is the normal situation in my research group, you would be the lead author on any jointly published paper arising out of research that you lead.  Any intellectual property arising from your research would be governed by the rules established by the University of California.
