It is normally more convenient to describe rhombohedral lattice using a corresponding hexagonal setting. This is a very basic crystallographic question, and the answer can be found on almost all books on crystallography.

You need a matrix to transform the indices and directions from hexagonal to rhombohedral or vice versa.
