As the quality of crude oil becomes worse, the residue hydrotreating has been developed in refinery. Metal deposition is one of the main reasons for catalyst deactivation and is also the focus of study of catalyst deactivation in the process of residue hydrotreating. The structural feature and the formation of metal compounds in the residue feed are analyzed in this review, which summarizes the formation and distribution of metal deposition on residue hydrotreating catalyst. It was discussed that the properties of feedstock, the operating conditions and the catalyst characteristics have impact on the metal deposition.

With the increasing heavies in the crude oil the residue hydrotreating has been developed in the field of refinery industry. However during the process of residue hydrotreating the metal deposition is one of the main causes to deactivate the catalysts and therefore being the focus point in the study of catalyst deactivation. In this review the structural features, formation of metal compounds in the residue, and the formation and distribution of metal deposition on residue hydrotreating catalyst are discussed, along with the impacts of the properties of feedstock, the operating conditions and the catalyst characteristics having on the metal deposition.
