New research shows that overweight or even mildly obese people have a lower risk of early death than people considered to be normal weight.

Researchers    (1)    the results of 97 studies. Most of the studies were less than 10 years old. They included almost three million    (2)    from around the world, including the United States, Canada, China, Taiwan, Brazil, India and Mexico.

The researchers work at the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

They found that people who are    (3)    overweight or slightly obese were five to six percent less likely to die from all causes than people of normal weight. People with higher obesity ratings, however, had almost a 30 percent greater risk of death    (4)    to normal-weight individuals.

Katherine Flegal was the    (5)    author of the study. She says she was not surprised that overweight people would not have a higher risk of death.

“Because we’d actually already read a lot of this literature and realized it was likely that [mortality rates for] overweight would be at least not higher than normal weight. I guess I was a little bit surprised that it was definitely lower. And I was also surprised that the lower rates of obesity also didn’t seem to differ from normal weight.”

But she says the difference in    (6)    appears to be small between normal-weight people and those who are overweight or mildly obese.

The study has    (7)    about “body mass index,” or BMI. This is a measurement of body fat as a ratio of height to weight. BMI guidelines were used as a basis for the study. In recent years, many public health experts have promoted body mass index    (8)    predict the risk of health problems. But a person's BMI can be misleading in some cases.

Steven Heymsfield is the executive director of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He says people can be    (9)    and in good health, but might weigh more because they are more muscular.

“It’s very common in the military, for example, where you have young men and women who are very physically fit -- their BMI can be a little higher. And so the military knows that, and they check people with body fat measurement if they exceed the BMI guideline.”

Still, Dr. Heymsfield says people should not think gaining extra weight is OK just because of the new findings.    (10)    . He and a colleague wrote an editorial that appeared along with the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

1. economy n.节约
例句:You think your economy is fucked now?
2. recession n.
The effects of the recession are being felt everywhere.
3. provide vt.提供
例句:We will provide suppressing fire!
4. increase vt. 提高
例句:The workers asked for an increase in their pay.
5. cooperation n. 合作
例句:We'd be most appreciative of your cooperation.
6. affect vt. 影响
Can it affect her mind?

1. Average home prices are no longer falling.
no longer 不再
例句:She is no longer a child.
2. In contrast, cooperation and creativity to deliver fiscal clarity, in particular, a plan for resolving the nation’s longer-term budgetary issues without harming the recovery could help make the New Year a very good one for the American economy.”

in contrast 相反
例句:In contrast, business climate can be created quickly!
I like meat in general, and mutton in particular.
3. “There’s an old saying that if we get the sniffles, the rest of the world gets a cold and so if we end up going to a recession as well, I think everybody is going to suffer.”
end up (以…)结束
例句:I don't know how this will end up.
The American economy is improving, but the rate of growth remains low. America’s jobless rate fell in 2012 to its lowest level in four years. Average home prices are no longer falling. And money has been flowing into financial markets.
But as the year ends, most observers say the economic recovery has not been as strong as they had hoped. One reason for the recovery is federal spending. Like many other countries, the United States is spending more money than it is receiving in taxes.
Some countries are spending money they do not have in an effort to get their economies growing again. Richard Rahn is an economist with the Cato Institute.
“If countries had only been spending within their means in keeping spending growing no faster than the rate of economic growth, we wouldn’t have the global economic mess.”
But other economists say the mathematics is not that simple. Desmond Lachman is with the American Enterprise Institute. He notes that deep budget cuts in Greece have produced a deep recession.
“Because what we’re doing is, we’re really applying very stringent austerity measures. The IMF concedes that the austerity hasn't been working, yet the Europeans are persisting in the same kind of austerity that got them into trouble in 2012, so something’s got to give.”
Financial reform activist Robert Bixby says the biggest problem for the American economy is the country’s political system.
“Political dysfunction in this country is a bigger threat than economic dysfunction.”
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says the country does not have to be this way. He has been urging lawmakers to provide leadership.
“Such uncertainties will only be increased by discord and delay. In contrast, cooperation and creativity to deliver fiscal clarity, in particular, a plan for resolving the nation’s longer-term budgetary issues without harming the recovery could help make the New Year a very good one for the American economy.”
Bruce Stokes is an economist at the Pew Research Center. He says if the economy does not improve, many nations will be affected.
“There’s an old saying that if we get the sniffles, the rest of the world gets a cold and so if we end up going to a recession as well, I think everybody is going to suffer.”
As one year ends and a new one begins, the world is watching President Obama and congressional leaders. Many people want to know how America’s political leaders will move to cut the budget deficit while protecting the economy.
