Manuscript Number: SSSCIE Title: New Lithium rechargeable batteries - Electrochemical performance of Chelation aided sol-gel synthesized nano-sized spinel LiMn2O4 and LiMxMn2-xO4: (M=Cr, Al; x=0.0-0.4) as a cathode materials coupled with doped Lithium nitride anodes Reviewers' comments: This paper reports the synthesis of nano sized particles of LiMn2O4 and LiMxMn2-xO4: (M=Cr, Al; x=0.00-0.40) using phthalic acid and fumaric acid as chelating agents by sol-gel method. The results seem to be valid, but this reviewer cannot see any originality in this paper. And this reviewer don not agree some explanations of this paper. 1. Page 4 “This solution was stirred continuously with gentle heating till to obtain a homogenous mass.” What is the temperature of gentle heating? 2. Page 4 What is the molar ratios between phthalic acid/fumaric acid and total metal ions? Why are this molar ratios between phthalic acid/fumaric acid. 3. Page 6 “The following multiple weight loss regions observed between 200–700oC corresponding to weight loss of 55% is associated with the decomposition of the acetate precursors and chelating agent.” In my opinion, it should include the loss of water of chemical bond water in the sample. 4. Page 8 The ionic radius of Mn4+ is 0.53 Å, but the ionic radius of Mn3+ depends on the spin state. In the low spin state (LS) the ionic radiuses is 0.58 Å, but in the high spin state (HS) its ionic radius is 0.645 Å (not 0.72 Å [R. D. Shannon, Acta Crystallogr., A32 (1976) 751.].5. Page 9 Crystallinity (i.e. crystal domains size) can be evaluated from peak width, but there is not peak width in this paper 6. Page 9 The LiMn2O4 powders calcined at 250 and 450 oC show sub-micron sized particles below 50nm with uniform morphology. In my opinion, the nano-sized material can not be seen by SEM. 7. Page 10 In my opinion, the nano-sized material can not be seen by SEM. 8. Page 10 The nano-sized material is difficult to be seen from Fig.8 and Fig.9 9. Page 11 “In the case of samples with higher Al-doping (0.40) good agglomerated particles were observed which would be beneficial for better electrochemical performance.” Several authors have reported that spinel lithium manganese oxide with agglomerated particles has worse electrochemical performance. Fig.12 The capacity of spinel lithium manganese oxide begins to fade after 50 cycles, but the cycle number of spinel lithium manganese oxide in the paper is only 10 cycles. 11. Page 15 “LiCr0.1Mn1.90O4 spinel exhibits slightly higher cathodic peak current (1.75mA) when compared to the un-doped one (1.45mA).” The cathodic peak current is also different due to the weight of the electrode or surface area. Considering the above points, regrettably, my opinion is that the manuscript is NOT suitable for publication in the Solid State Sciences |
