ABSTRACT
Wereportthesynthesis,characterization,andcovalentsurfacechemistryof!àmagnetomicelles!–,cross-linked,amphiphilicblock-copolym
micellesthatencapsulatesuperparamagneticironoxidenanoparticles.Becausethesecompositenanostructuresassemblespontaneously
fromsolutionbysimultaneousdesolvationofnanoparticleandamphiphilicpoly(styrene
-block-acrylicacid )components,explicitsurface

functionalizationoftheparticlesisnotrequired,andtheencapsulationmethodwasappliedtodifferentmagneticnanoparticlesizesand
compositions.TEMimagesofthemagnetomicellesillustratedthatthenumberofencapsulatedparticlescouldbedictatedrationallybysynthetic
conditions.ThemagneticpropertiesoftheparticleswerecharacterizedbySQUIDmagnetometryandfollowedthegeneralLangevinmagnetic
modelforsuperparamagneticmaterials.Themicellarshellsoftheseparticleswerefunctionalizedusingcovalentchemistrythatwouldnot
ordinarilybepossibleonthemagneticparticlesurface.Asaresult,thisnoncovalentapproachprovidesanewroutetotechnologicalapplications
ofhydrophobicmagneticnanomaterialsthatlackappropriateconjugatesurfacechemistry. |
