Title:  Preparation and characterization of a novel epoxy ecofriendly curing agent from renewable

This manuscript reported the preparation of an environmentally-friendly curing agent (SOEA) for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) from epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The results indicate that SOEA used as a curing agent has shown excellent flexibility and low-volatile performance and potential damping capacity, indicating that SOEA can be used as an alternative to replace or partially replace the petroleum-based epoxy curing agents. The conclusions and interpretations were very well supported by the experimental data. Therefore, I highly recommend publication of this manuscript in Journal of the American Oil Chemists. However, for the synthesis of SOEA in the manuscript, the procedure of the SOEA purification should provide in detail.

Title: Preparation and characterization of a novel epoxy eco-friendly curing agent from renewable resources

General comments

This is a very interesting work which deals with the synthesis and characterization of a bio-based potential curing agent for DGEBA. The authors have carried a great amount of work to innovate a new cross-linking agent that could be a substitute of some of the commercial ones currently used. Even so, the manuscript contains several points that must be clarified and/or modified to meet the journal's desired standard and it is not acceptable in the present form .
In particular, the rational of the synthesis should be carefully revised.  Authors assume that reaction products are the same as those obtained from LC/MS. The formation of such products (i.e. cleaved ESO and a new functional group HN-O-C(=O) – which the authors call amide but it is not) is very unlikely under the mild reaction conditions used in this work. Characterization of the reaction product (HRMN , FTIR, etc) is poorly explored and needs further work. The way to show the results obtained for the novel epoxy resins is somewhat poor and need further and must be contrasted with some traditional epoxy resin (i.e. DGEBA – amino-based cross-linking agent).

My comments

1.- Introduction
Introduction should offer a detailed account on the subject. A description of the synthetic strategy should be provided in this section. Nothing is said about the reaction between ESO and the multifunctional AEEA. AEEA has two functional groups (OH and NH2) which can potentially open the oxirane rings of ESO. References supporting the attack of NH2 must be included.

2.- Materials
ESO and DGEBA epoxy equivalent weights should be provided.

3.- Experimental
3.1. Synthesis of SOEA should be described with more detail. How did you fix the reaction conditions and the amount of each reagent?
3.2. LC/MS. Please describe the method (column of LC, injector temperature, run time , source of electron in MS, etc).?
3.3. Curing reaction. Which is the stoichiometry of the mixtures?
3.4. Mechanical properties. How many samples did you test? For tensile test you need an average of 6-10 samples of each formulation in order to report average values. The same can be said for DMA studies.  Statistics??
3.5. Statistical analysis of the obtained results is mandatory.

4. Results
4.1. How do the authors explain the products proposed in scheme 1? Please check the functional groups formed. It is necessary compare the products proposed herein with data from the literature.
4.2. LC/MS. Authors assume that the main fragments in MS are the reaction products. During MS different fragments can be formed, and these fragments can be subsequently fragmented again. Nothing is said about how MS was analyzed and contrasted.
4.3. HRMN also needs a deep discussion. Some signals progressively varied with time: delta: 1.8, 2, 2.2, etc. If an AMIDE is formed (as the authors stated in FTIR analysis), where is the signal of the H attached to nitrogen?. Please explain.
4.5. Are the mixtures (DGEBA-SOEA) initially miscible? Authors stated that DGEBA/SOEA has no phase separation but nothing is said about the other system. Morphologies can be easily evaluated by SEM.
4.6.Line 21, page 5. Switch fig. 5 by Fig 6.
4.7. DSC. Please include the ratio DGEBA/curing agent used in this study.
4.8. TGA. Why did you choose SP0.9 for this study? How did the authors define the initial thermal decomp’ositoin temperature? Results should be contrasted con data from literature for similar systems.
4.9. Page 6, line 57. Authors stated: The aromatic content of AEEA/DGEBA is higher than that of SP0.9 as the result of the higher aliphatic chain content of SOEA. The aromatic content is more liable to carbonize at a higher temperature in an inner atmosphere, due impart to its higher carbon/hydrogen ratio.” Since aromatic structures come from DGEBA, why AEEA/DGEBA have a higher aromatic content than SP0.9? If so, both samples cannot be compared.....

I believe the deficiencies noted by Reviewer 2 merit rejection. The characterization of the reaction products is an area of particular concern. However, if the authors can improve their chemical analysis, and prepare a new manuscript, JAOCS will consider it.
