Abstract.The effect of electron beam (EB) irradiation on polytetrauoroethylene (PTFE) film has been
studied in air at room temperature. Changes in the chemical structure were determined by Fourier
transform infrared (FTIR). Morphological changes on the film surface were described using field
emitting scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface hydrophilicity of the modified film was
characterized through water contact angle measurement. The scission of the chain in the surface of
PTFE film was induced by electron irradiation. The atomic ration (F/C) was decreased and the atomic
ration (O/C) was increased. Surface roughness of the sample irradiated increased. In case of irradiation
in presence of residual air carboxylic acid fuoride groups are incorporated which can hydrolyze to
carboxylic groups in the surface-near regions. These polar groups reduce the hydrophobic and
oleophobic properties so much that the water contact angle of the film surface reduced significantly.
