| no excess carbon phase could be imaged by HRTEM even annealing the samples at temperatures as high as 1400 ºC, no matter which way the carbon exists in ceramics: homogeneous distribution of carbon clusters or a network of graphitic-like lamellae of a few atom layers. Two reasons might explain this phenomena: a) the carbon phase is not well ordered (amorphous-like) and hence gives a similar projected potential as the surrounding amorphous SiCN and/or, b) the ordered carbon regions are considerably smaller than the foil thickness (10–20 nm) illuminated by the electron beam. |
