| The alkaline hydrolysis of ester is mostly the nucleophilic addition -- elimination, OH is a stronger nucleophile, which can make nucleophilic addition with carbonyl carbon of ester, and dosn't vanish in the final product but lost in the acid hydrolysis of the ester. The component and weight are both constant before and after the reaction, which enhance the rate of ester hydrolysis. The explanation for different mechanisms of ester acid-base reaction is that the reaction in alkaline is faster than that in acidic conditions. |
