The outer portion of the portula has an intermediate stage of formation where there is an overgrowth of silica surrounding the central inner pore and flanking subsidiary pores (Figure 14e). The completed structure consists of a tube of the inner pore and flanking subsidiary pores that open into a chamber on the outer valve face (Figure 14f). The chamber tapers to form the outer opening (Figure 14f). No details of portulae formation have been described in the literature, but these observations (Figure 14) suggest a highly controlled process involved in shaping the complicated structure. Perhaps a similar type of complex is involved in portulae formation.
