ÄǶÎÎÄ×ÖÈçÏ£ºAnother example of mesoscale structure formation in T. pseudonana is formation of the portulae (Figure 14). The portulae appear to be designed for chitin extrusion123,124 through the outer opening. The inner and outer structures of the portulae are distinct (Figure 14a). The inner structure consists of a large central pore flanked on the sides by two horseshoe-shaped pores (Figure 14b). The outer pore is circular or oval shaped and buttressed by ribs extending from the valve surface (Figure 14c). The portulae are formed at a very early stage in valve synthesis, and the inner pore is created via circularization and extension of a cylindrical structure at an early stage in deposition (Figure 14d). The outer portion of the portula has an intermediate stage of formation where there is an overgrowth of silica surrounding the central inner pore and flanking subsidiary pores (Figure 14e). The completed structure consists of a tube of the inner pore and flanking subsidiary pores that open into a chamber on the outer valve face (Figure 14f). The chamber tapers to form the outer opening (Figure 14f). No details of portulae formation have been described in the literature, but these observations (Figure 14) suggest a highly controlled process involved in shaping the complicated structure.
