I also suggest to reduce the intensity of the land use signatures – the lines (the river and the catchments of the reservoirs) should be clearly visible while the land use should function as background information. Probably your GIS software does not support such a graphical finesse. In such a case it might help to export several versions of the map (one with the land use and one without it) and overlay both maps in an image processing software (e.g. Photoshop or GIMP). Using layer transparency you can easily achieve the desired effect.
