| Cleopatra was renowned for giving away emeralds carved with her image to anyone in her favor; this is probably why the mines are known to this day as hers. Stones have been found in tombs in the pyramids, and some of the stones in crown-jewel regalia in European museums are thought to have come from this locality, being noticeably different from those from the historic Habachtal mines in Austria or the gems that came from Colombia with the Spanish conquest. The mining operation included thousands of meters of tunnels and excavations, all documented. They were abandoned shortly after Cleopatra's reign but have been reopened several times since 1819. Unfortunately, little remains to be found but pale-colored, poor-quality chunks. Even the known Egyptian stones in European museums are of poor quality (for emerald) and are usually only up to a few carats in size. |
