iThe bacterial genus Pseudomonas comprises several hundred species of Gram-negative c-it was designated Pseudomonas entomophila (Vodovar et al. 2005). http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/d ... 5X.2009.02785.x/pdf The bacterial genus Pseudomonas comprises several hundred species of Gram-negative c-proteobacteria, characterized by metabolic versatility and production of numerous secondary metabolites (Palleroni 1984). Diverse bacterial isolates from fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and decaying fruits were tested for their ability to induce a systemic immune response in D. melanogaster larvae. One isolate was capable of triggering Diptericin (antimicrobial peptide) expression in both larvae and adults, and it was highly pathogenic to Drosophila by oral ingestion. Histological analyses of infected larvae throughout the course of infection indicated a strong perturbation of gut physiology induced by this bacterial isolate (Vodovar et al. 2005). Subsequent comparison of its 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) with existing 16S rRNA sequences clearly demonstrated that the bacterial isolate belongs to pseudomonads, and it was designated Pseudomonas entomophila (Vodovar et al. 2005). |
