[½»Á÷] ¡¾Weekly Topic¡¿Have you ever regretted being in a science degree?

I know most people here are or were in a science degree. From the posts in this forum, I can see that studying science or being in a research position (master of philosophy, doctor of philosophy) is increasingly looking unattractive to a growing number of people in or out of the circle. It saddens people when the reality is research positions can be referred as to be over-competitive.

People around me end up being in different industries, and irony is that most are not staying in research. People do high-school teaching, engineering, medicine, sales, and the law. Some even begin to pursue a career in business. Maybe scientific research comes to the top of the list when it comes to attrition rate.

Nowadays it¡¯s hard to people to get a tenure in universities. Normally the prerequisite is to be a Ph.D. Things get changed rapidly. I heard (maybe over-heard, anyway) that it¡¯s no longer enough to get university lectureship if one¡¯s only got a certificate without post doctor working experience. Therefore, people are going abroad in order to get something to decorate their CV.

We can do a simple calculation, one gets into uni at 18, finishes undergraduate at 22, finishes master at 25, and finishes Ph.D at 28. By the time this person comes back there, he would have been at his/her 30¡¯s. It can be seen as a long term investment, while the outcome is becoming more and more out of reach of ¡°decent¡±.

Yea it¡¯s horrible when we find at our 30¡¯s, we are not having a permanent position but being a contractor. Our family is in need of an umbrella while we always fail to provide it.

I don¡¯t know but maybe you guys can share something with us.

(Uh... Thanks for re-positioning my post the other day.  Maybe with luck this one would be, too)

RE:
"it¡¯s no longer enough to get university lectureship if one¡¯s only got a certificate without post doctor working experience."

RESPONSE:
My dad heard the same (while living outside the PRC) and responded by giving top seniors of his department lecturers for a year so they could all write that on their CV's
------------------------------------------------
RE:
"it¡¯s hard to people to get a tenure in universities. "

RESPONSE:
Did you know that many top Pharma companies (Pfizer, Merk,...) have "tenured" research positions?  It might not be called "tenure" but the research staff in these companies are structured almost identical to universities
------------------------------------------------
RE:
"Maybe scientific research comes to the top of the list when it comes to attrition rate."

SHORT:
Think twice before following the steps of another PostDoc-to-be
COMPLETE:

FINAL THOUGHT:
Be on the lookout for a in-forum message from me to you
Or better yet since you are already a Forum Moderator, Lopemann, maybe you can write to me about starting either a Topic (or an entire new EMuch Section !!) titled "Alternative Career Choices"
I'm not experienced (or tenured ) enough to put either thought into action.  Maybe together we can save a few souls from following conventional wisdom... What do you say??

I found out something, that most of us are not so satisfied with our present major or researching fields. We are always considering that other's are much better.
...

I use to think in this way but not anymore.

The attrition rate is being real in scientific industry, which is beyond our discussion I reckon.

A master in chemistry may just be a high school teacher, and I don't think a person of the SAME BACKGROUND with a finance major will end up being in the same position. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying these people will not become high school teacher, what I'm saying is that they are more likely to be in a related industry and have a long way to go, not like a high school teacher.

Alright, maybe people around me who do quantitative risks or analysis all have a good outcome, which can not be generalized.
I do find people in these industries hate what they are doing, but the difference is being that they don't have to worry about job prospect, but rather work-life balance.

While in research, you know it's very common for a post doc in Organic Lab to work more than 70 hrs per week, bearing all the risks from chemical hazard, and worrying about the expire date of contract, and a permanent position that is far beyond reach.

I saw quite a few potentially excellent chemists changing their career orientation after their master in Chemistry, or even in their PhD period of time. Those among these people with a strong foundation of mathematics tend to do some applied math, like financial math, actuarial studies/science. They end up being in a very good position and a good life.

Fairness, in many occasions, is when you are experiencing being disadvantaged for a long time and gradually getting used to it, living with it, feeling uncomfortable when making a change.
