There are 3 job openings for PhD students. Each PhD student will perform some of the following tasks:
isotope enrichment of photosynthetic organisms, isolation of light-harvesting proteins and preparation in different functional states
application of ssNMR concepts for structure determination of pigment and protein sites
protein membrane reconstitution and preparation of lipid nanodiscs
development of methods for in-situ NMR

Requirements

You hold an MSc degree in (bio)physics or (bio)chemistry with excellent grades and have a genuine interest to perform research on the intersection between physics, chemistry and biology. Experience with protein NMR is a strong plus. As the research will be carried out in an international and interdisciplinary environment, other requirements are excellent communication skills and good skills in written and spoken English. You will publish the results in international peer-reviewed journals and conclude the project with a doctoral thesis.
What we offer

The successful applicant is initially appointed for one year, extendible to a total period of four years. Appointment will be under the terms of the CAO (collective labour agreement) of the Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary is set on ? 2.042,- in the first year up to ? 2.612,- in year four (PhD scale). This is based upon a fulltime employment and in conformity with current salary scales under the collective employment agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities. An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and facilitates other benefits such as an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8,3%. Candidates from outside The Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
