If the theory of Plate Tectonic Theory is the most representative academic innovation in the 20th century, the international geological community is undergoing a new revolution in the following 21th century, that is, single interdisciplinary research turn to multi-disciplinary cross research, so called “earth system science” research. Furthermore, this multi-disciplinary cross research not only limited to various branches of geology, but included with the atmospheric science, oceanography, biology and other disciplines intersect development. Many occurred major geological or climatic events actually reflect the interaction of multi spheres, especially Cenozoic uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, is closely related to circle interaction of lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere.

Throughout Earth's orogenic belt, Tibetan Plateau become to be a research focus and an ideal natural laboratory of earth system sciences researches in the world due to its complex formation mechanism, highest elevation, the largest cover area, the most important environmental effect and the most fragile ecological system. The demise of the new Tethys Ocean and the collision of the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate were result from northward subduction of the Indian Plate from Cenozoic Era. These structure changes of lithosphere affect northern hemisphere and global scale atmospheric circulation, weathered erosion of shallow surface plateau, geomorphology fractionation , drainage adjustment , animal and plant succession and formation and evolution of mineral resources. Therefore, the Tibetan Plateau is a key region for multi spheres, including lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, interactions research in Cenozoic.

On the one hand, the basic theory researches on the Tibetan Plateau is a great chance to enrich research breakthroughs and occupy commanding heights of international academic opportunity for earth system science researches of China. It probably provides China a leadership in international earth system science development. On the other hand, for national strategy, researches on relations of the Tibetan Plateau uplift and resource and environment effects helps to understand many uncertainties of problems which humanity are facing in climatic change. Furthermore, these researches could play an important role in supporting rational utilization of local resource and sustainable development of social.
