The way we learn English

English, I think most people agree is a headache to Chinese students. We spend a lot of time on it, but an absolutely majority of students can not speak it. We try many ways to learn this language. We remember words, we read grammar books, we do exercises. But we still can not use it. There are two questions about such a phenomenon, the first one is, should we spend so much time on English? the second one is, why cannot we use English after we spend so much time on it? Let's discuss the second topic first. I think, the reason why we cannot use English well is that, we still regard English as a subject for students, we don't regard it as a language. Yes, if it is a subject, we need to spend a lot of time on it, doing exercise, trying to pass the exams; if it is a language, the first way to learn it is to use it. The way to learn a language, include to speak, to listen and to write. But how do we study it? Yes, you can complain that our teachers can not speak this language, but do you have other ways to do speaking, listening or writing? Yes, I think there is, have you ever watched a movie for many times in order to learn the language? We have access to many English-speaking movies, I think many students have watched many of these movies, but few of us pay attention to the language. Do you often watch the English channel of CCTV? Do you often write in English? Similar to writing, another way of improving writing is copying, write an essay or anything written by a native speaker on your notebook, as copying, you will remember how the native speaker use this language. However, I have never copied anything. The third way is, to speak. I think individuals differ in their ability of learning languages. Yes, it is difficult for some people to learn a language, especially speaking. But, have you ever tried, at least speak to yourself when you are alone? The first topic, should we spend so much time on English for every student? I think no, especially when English is used as one of the most important standards to choose students for further study. I think, at least, we can remove English from some of the majors, such as Chinese, or other branches of traditional Chinese culture. Let our young students spend more time on their majors. I think for most of them, after their graduation, they do not need to use this language, or they do not need to learn it any more. So, why should they spend so much time on this language? On the wall of a university, the words say, xxx university changes (or another verb) your dream into a job. So, for most of the students in our college, I think going to work after graduation (I mean undergraduates), is their firs choice, so, let's prepare them for job-hunting, not for anything else. Because we don't use this language, so for most students, the most important way to learn English is to read books for examinations. This is not efficient in learning a language. So, from tomorrow, let's speak this language, let's listen to it, let's write in it, if you really like it, and need to use it. |

I still remember years ago in the classroom, my oral English teacher wrote two words on the blackboard. They were "Speak English". He said he had no other suggestion. If we could always follow the only suggestion, we don't need other ones. can't agree more with winter_north, English is a language to use. Let's speak English. |

The first question is wonderful! Do we need to spend so many years on this? My answer is NO! Try to have a call back, most of us strart to sudy Englis since Primary school,how many years we spent on it until we have graduation from college? To the end,just leave some pieces of word,'thank you,Hello' that we konw. A story impressed me all the time,Richard Max only take three months to study English,the level he reach is nothing like us,he can read newspaper all by himself,talk with other people.Yes,he is a great man,but he can do it ,why not us? About second question,I do believe the education system is the key! Maybe there are some problems with us,but all of us has been educated to pass the exam,not to learn a language for our future. Maybe we need to realize the art and beauty of the language first. Then you will desire to master it, get close to it. To learn under no pressure rather than too purposfully found in many of us sometimes is an efficient way for a long-term study, definitely, the use of a language.  |

It is certainly a huge challenge lying ahead of us to enjoy the beauty of a FOREIGN language. Before we can achieve that, we might ask ourselves a question. Are we enjoying the beauty of our mother tongue ? basically, to understand, is more than vocubulary. it involves as well interpersonal experience, education background and culture&history knowledge. to enjoy, is more than understanding. it involves as well your personal taste and your feel of language. though difficult, we are trying on the way. a few of us may reach a high level, 'cause they spend more efforts than others [ Last edited by nwsuafliu on 2013-10-23 at 21:32 ] |

English has really been a headache subject for me since I stared it from primary school. I spend a lot of time on it everyday, but I don't have access to it actually. I find it is so hard that I want to escape from it. But now I would change my mind, because I am aware of the reason that I'm always fail it. The anwer is simple, everyday I just spend lots of time remembering the words, doing exercise, passing the exam, but I never really use it in my daily life. I did not speak in English, write in English, even more I did not watch the English movie because I hate English. So from now on, let's use it! Come on ! I'm confidient that we can succeed in it! |

Yes, compared with many countries, we have a much poorer environment for speaking English. The French, German, Spanish.. can only be regarded as a dialect of English, India, and many other countries have been colonized by Britain for many years (I do not mean I like been colonized, absolutely). For many years when we stayed in school, the English-learning is just like any others course, we should pass the test and get our certificate. We never planed to deal with English as an language. When we worked, we have to use English as a tool for communcation, we should speak it fluently. That is language, not just the work and experssion for the test. I do agree that English is not necessary for some majors, like Chinese etc., though there were someone had been awarded their degree on Chinese in the country other than China. But we still will failed if the purpose of learning English is to meet the demand of test or score. Tomorrow is too late, if you want to learning this language, and let's start talking, listening from now! |
